I dreaded the foam topper and did everything I could to avoid it. Unfortunately, my wife's hip pain was getting worse and we didn't have a choice. We gave this gel foam a try as an alternative and to my surprise, I actually liked it (even though I like hard beds). In fact, I don't think I've ever slept better and my wife's hip pain is completely gone. She absolutely loves it which is a good thing. When you consider the cost of a new mattress, you can't go wrong with this topper.

Regarding smell, it took about two weeks for the smell to completely dissipate. However, the smell never really bothered either one of us during that two week period (small price to pay for the comfort).

As for the heat retention that a few others have mentioned, I'm about 6' 220lbs and don't like being hot when I sleep. After having the topper for about 6 weeks, I have not noticed any issues regarding heat retention.

Another reviewer on another site mentioned that the gel foam lost its spongie properties in a short amount of time where they mostly laid. After 6 weeks of use, we have not noticed any such issue.

Like others, we bought ours at Costco at a considerably cheaper price than here on Amazon. I still buy many things on Amazon and appreciate their no-censor policy regarding where to find the cheaper price. Seller integrity = Buyer loyalty.....

I read many different reviews and searched website after website, until I finally decided on the Sleep Innovations gel-memory foam mattress topper. The mixture of gel and memory foam make this mattress topper unbelievably comfortable. I was a little leery at first because I am a pretty large man and it is only 2 1/2 inches thick, but after laying down in it I soon realized my worries dissipated quickly. My wife absolutely loves this mattress topper because it has completely transformed our old mattress and we both have shoulder, back and neck pains. So far it has taken such a great deal of pressure off of our joints, that I'm thinking about buying one for my father as well. I definitely recommend this mattress topper. I think it's the best mattress topper on the market, but make sure you do your research as well.

No smell whatsoever when I opened the packaging even though I was expecting some.
Mattress stretched out and had no markings after only about 2 hours, well ahead of what I was expecting.
Even with it touching a wall that is hit by sunlight during the day, it does not get hot like my old spring mattress underneath did.
It feels amazing every single time I lay on it and it never leaves pits that I fall into.
I am so glad that I bought memory gel instead of memory foam.
You will be too!

Yesterday my Serta 2.5-Inch Queen Gel-Memory Foam Mattress Topper arrived. This thing is great! I couldn't be happier with it and just wish I had bought it sooner.

I think it's the GEL that makes the difference.

I appreciated the fact that the cover that goes over the mattress topper isn't at all difficult to put on. I didn't have to struggle with it at all! It easily went over the mattress topper and the regular mattress underneath.

I got the mattress topper out of the box, placed it on the bed, etc. By the time I got in bed last night I had almost forgotten that anything was new or different. A few minutes later I realized I wasn't tossing and turning the way I normally do. I just felt more 'comfortable' than usual. There was a 'cool' feel to it. I'm not really sure how or why, but it felt cooler than my old mattress topper, which is memory foam, but not the Gel-Memory Foam. I slept great! It felt as if I were just sinking into a cloud. Very nice!

That's the subjective part of it. Now down to the specifics.I had read reports from other reviewers that their mattress topper had an odor when it arrived. Mine had no odor. I put my nose right next to it and sniffed. I could smell no odor at all. It may depend on the weather or other variables.

As usual, I read the instructions AFTER I was finished. Not smart. Fortunately, I was very, very careful as I cut the packaging.

It comes in a vacuum-sealed bag, which you open very carefully with a pair of scissors, being VERY cautious not to cut the foam. There is a protective fabric liner on the mattress topper. That also helped keep me from cutting the foam, which you certainly do not want to do. That part was easy!

The mattress topper weighs about 33 lbs, but wasn't very hard to toss onto my bed. I let it "air out" and expand for a few hours before I put the cover on it. Mine had no crimping. It lay flat with no problem. The cover was easy to stretch over the mattress topper and the mattress below. I was able to put my fitted sheet over it with no more problem than usual. That went easier than I had anticipated.

The instructions say that "You may notice an odor when the package is opened. This is completely harmless and normal for 'fresh foam' and will gradually dissipate within a few days." Mine had no detectable odor at all, and I'm fairly sensitive to odors.

The instructions say "You might notice loose gel beads. These micro gel beads are infused into the Gel Memory Foam, and occasionally fall out." Mine did not fall out. I didn't notice any loose gel beads.

The instructions say, "It may take up to 72 hours for the topper to fully expand and recover to its original shape. It is fine to sleep on your mattress topper during the recovery process as your body heat will actually promote recovery." Mine expanded almost instantly and was fine.

The instructions talk about "Do not put anything on top of your mattress topper or on the corners to force it to lay flat. The edges of the mattress topper may appear crimped. This is normal and the edges will regain their natural form during the recovery process." Mine didn't have that problem. There was no crimping. Everything lay flat immediately.

It says that "Most customers feel comfortable on the first night...Others may take a few weeks..." I was MORE than comfortable on the first night.

I love it!

EDITED a week later to say that I couldn't be happier with my mattress topper. I am definitely sleeping better because of it. If I had to put a number to it, I would say that I am sleeping 30% better. I ordered and just got the Gel-Infused Memory Foam Pillows. I thought if the mattress topper is that good, the pillows have to be too. They are taking a little more time to get used to, but the instructions say that it can take 24-48 hours for a pillow to renew itself. I'll write a review on the pillows, but I'm going to give them a little more time to get used to them....

I have a high quality pillow top mattress, and while it's a few years old I still thought it more than sufficient and never considered looking into these new foam pads being marketed, but I was thrilled to get the opportunity to try one when it became available on Vine. The pad itself was surprisingly heavy, and a bit of a challenge to get up the stairs and out of the box and interior packaging. I wasn't ready to strip the sheets off the bed until the next day, so the pad stayed on the floor until then and I did try stepping on it a few times to see how it felt, which was perfectly squishy and the pad sprung right back to original shape.

The pad sent was queen, but I have a full mattress and I did need to cut the pad down to fit, but with some heavy duty scissors I was able to accomplish that task with minimal fuss, and then covered it with the very generous mattress cover included with the pad. Put the sheets back on (will need some with a more generous size to them, but I was due for new linens anyway) and I was in business. I read in bed quite a bit sitting up, and the Memory Foam really made for a most comfortable *reading chair*. I slept like a babe last night, the pad really performs like its advertised. I hadn't realized how much body heat the regular old mattress held, and was pleasantly surprised that this pad doesn't do it.

Count me one happy consumer, and I suspect those with bad backs and/or neck issues would definitely want to give this product consideration. I don't have a lot of *disposable income*, so because of that I might not have given purchasing this product serious consideration, but I suspect I will soon learn that I can't live without it now...

I have a bed that was wonderful when I bought it, but its been 6 years and is "broken in" and not as comfortable as it use to be but I didn't want to buy a new mattress. I did a lot of research and chose this product. The benefits that I am enjoying the most is I am a hot sleeper and would always wake up sweaty despite the temp in the room, not once since using the gel-memory foam mattress pad have I woken up sweaty or even over warm. I also am waking up with little to no back pain (always had before) and not stiff anymore. The other thing I am very impressed with is I am a "big" girl, yet each night you can't tell where I slept on the bed the night before, springs right back into shape. The topper is fantastic, has not shifted or moved at all, and neither has the gel pad. I did not have any chemical odor problems (as some others had said)....but I did unpack in the morning to give it a day to un-fold and had the window fan on just in case. I would recommend this over and over again, I don't want to get out of bed in the morning. My ONLY con....is I had to buy expensive sheets, because my mattress is already 17" deep and this added another 3" .....so I found some sheets with spandex sides that go up to 24" deep and they were not cheap, so that was another $100 added to my total, but I still have 100% pleased....

While this topper may, in the industrial laboratory setting, be measurably cooler than conventional memory foam (and certainly cooler than the earliest versions), I'm not sure I can tell the difference in real life. It's an excellent quality product at a fair price. A nicely made, washable cover, sized to fit mattresses of various thickness, comes with it -- in all, a product to keep and enjoy. Just don't expect it to work miracles. A fan on the nightstand may still be required.

I read alot of reviews about different toppers and decided to go with this one because the gel is suppose to spread the heat. I can't stand being too hot at night. It is slightly warmer, but it doesn't bother me at all. I also read alot about the smell. At first the smell was pretty strong. I put it in the backroom and let it air out for about six hours. By then I could barely smell it at all and was able to sleep on it the first night. I can't describe how upset I am I didn't buy one years ago. It is so comfortable tears came to my eyes. So I would advise you to buy one.

Purchased a latex mattress from Original Mattress Company and after the first week, realized it was a little too firm. Since it is such a hassle to return a mattress I decided to be creative while still in my 30 day trial period. Had tried the Serta iComfort but was a little put off by the fact that it is not a "flippable" mattress, and for me, logic dictates that having two usable sides must prolong the life of the mattress (the iComfort is pretty pricey as well). Purchased the Serta topper and it is FANTASTIC! My bed now feels like the iComfort at a fraction of the cost and everything is "flippable". Sleeping better than I have in ages, no pressure points, not sleeping "hot" as some have noted with regular memory foam. I feel like I got the best of both worlds and saved some money, too. As an aside, I had paid for overnight shipping and apparently there was a mechanical problem with the plane carrying my topper. I contacted Amazon to request an adjustment in shipping cost and they kindly refunded the entire shipping fee even though the product was only one day late. Thank you Amazon for great customer service!.
